Can Technology Replace Everything?

In today’s culture, we quite literally have the world at our fingertips. With YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest,  and apps like iTunesU- we can learn about anything, and how to do just about everything. We want it now, and we want to learn about it, now. We have all become masters at looking good at something while lacking depth, understanding, and any real knowledge on the topic.  Unfortunately, this is even more prevalent in the Christian Community. With thousands of books about the Bible and thousands of Pastors that become idols of sorts, we have set the very word of God aside and stopped relying on it. Instead, we believers are turning to just about everyone and everything BUT the Bible. We are turning to self-help books, books that talk about the Bible, books that talk about Jesus, DVD series that teach about subjects in the Bible, but rarely are we using the Bible the way it was intended, to be read and studied in its entirety- as a whole complete work. Alongside that, we are not approaching scripture with an accurate worldview.  Instead of looking at scripture with a biblical worldview, we are looking at it with a worldly, worldview.  Another way to put that is we are no longer approaching the word of God with reverence and fear of The Lord, but instead with a Frankenstein type theology where we pick and choose what we want to get out of it, and leave it at that. This is an incredibly dangerous, and concerning trend.

John Stonestreet, and T. M. Moore, attempt the daunting task of addressing this growing issue head on in their new DVD Bible study series, He Has Spoken, The Worldview of Scripture’. “He Has Spoken” features a five-part DVD series with a study guide to accompany it.

The beginning of the DVD began by discussing the dangers of taking bible verses out of context, how we don’t read an entire passage like we should (but just a verse) and that we rely too heavily on outside sources- all of which aid in making Christians biblically illiterate.  I couldn’t have agreed more.  Being someone that is challenged almost daily by family and friends who don’t believe (and whom often use verses they’ve heard about, in the wrong context), I was excited at what I was hearing.   He Has Spoken continued to make a wonderful case for the importance of approaching Scripture with reverence and setting it’s audience up to dig in deeper through the study guide.

After watching the weekly DVD chapter, the study guide has you read about pages worth a day for the week, followed by some questions to initiate reflection.  I  appreciated how the study guide also used some common verses that have been taken out of context, corrects the readers, and uses that to train them how to read scripture. The combination of correction and redirection works well and will be tangible for anyone taking part in the series.

With all of this said, however,  I wasn’t a fan of He Has Spoken, The Worldview of Scripture.  The DVD content itself was rushed, and so many times I was left hanging and wanting more depth.  There was a lot of content (all of it solid and true), but they only scratched the surface of it.  If they want to reach their audience and make an impact, there are going to need to dig much deeper and slow down. Not only are they going to need to dig deeper and slow down, but they are going to need to take their advice and use more scripture. The entire series was incredibly lukewarm.  The series wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great.  It was good.  It was lukewarm.  If He Has Spoken wants to reach my generation (and, the following), they are going to need to be willing to spend some time with their audience.  There are a lot of lies we’ve believed that need to be dealt with in a systematic and tough way. The people I around don’t want to be coddled-we want to be rebuked, corrected, redirected, and trained up.  Hit us with it.  It’s ok if it hurts.  This series doesn’t rely on scripture enough to move it’s readers to repentance, which is what needs to happen to have true healing where one can then begin with a healthy approach to scripture.

The other day I toured this awesome packaging plant, Aagard Group.  It was brilliant at how automated things were and also just how deep their knowledge was about packaging.  You could tell they took their time mastering that skill, and fine tuning the process.  Everything they said during the tour made me want to study engineering and just understand what they do more. They weren’t rushed, but very confident.  I could see why they had tours and why business was booming.  That’s what I want in a bible study.  I want to be in awe. I want to feel like I need to up my game.  You know?

Overall, He Has Spoken, The Worldview of Scripture is not a DVD series I would recommend.  Although I do think plenty of people can and will learn from it,  there are much more in-depth series that do what they set out to, and more. Most importantly, however, you will be much better served by just reading the actual Bible more, and in place of any series.  If the Bible is really what we all claim it to be, the very breath and words of God, then it’s enough. Remember, long before TV’s and DVD’s people did just read The Word.  Read the Bible. Study the Bible. Trust God. In area’s of confusion or what seems to be contradictions, pray and then reach out to the plethora of resources we have at our fingertips.

Major Vulnerability allows hackers to take over Nuclear Power Plants

Hackers have the power to exploit a major vulnerability in the Industrial Ethernet Switches; a vulnerability that allows them to take over any Nuclear Power Plant and Hydroelectric Dam.

For those of you who still believe that hackers are only able to destroy websites, you are in for a wake-up call. In fact, new research has revealed some of the most unbelievable vulnerabilities in the Industrial Ethernet Switches (IES). This revealed vulnerability, allows a hacker to easily gain access into a Nuclear Power Plant or Hydroelectric Dam.

ust a few short weeks ago, security researchers uncovered the details of the vulnerabilities, and also presented the critical vulnerabilities in IES at the yearly BlackHat Cyber Security Conference in Las Vegas.

IES connects several devices inside of large power plants, hydroelectric dams, refineries, ports, factories as well as a few other industrial organizations. The IES is also responsible for the maintenance of the company’s internal network. With that in mind, the vulnerabilities that were found in IES will not only allow a cyber attacker gain access to the network, but will also allow them to gain full control over the respective plant/dam. If the vulnerabilities are revealed to the wrong person, the event could lead to fatal damages.

Although IES are not used inside of residential places, they are often used inside of larger scale operations. In fact, security researchers have proven that the hubs contain certain potential “pitfalls” that could ultimately result in catastrophic damages, if a large scale cyber attack did actually occur.

Some of the known security flaws in IES include a recurrent usage of default passwords, hard coded encryption keys, and a lack of the proper authentication that is needed for the firmware updates. The security researchers also claim that the combination of these three vulnerabilities form the basic fundamental failures of the security, thus ultimately making it rather easy and simple for hackers to gain access to their targeted system.

Anything that the facility is capable of in its natural operating system, you’re [an attacker] capable of doing – and doing damage with if you control the network. With a power station, you can have major repercussions. With a hydroelectric dam, if you don’t monitor processes in a normal situation, it’ll spin out of control. Everything you have can be manipulated,” Robert Lee, a security researcher and an active-duty U.S. Air Force Cyber Warfare Operations Officer, told The Daily Dot in a interview

Another major security issue with IES, is that the hubs are also commonly used to connect the inner workings of the respective facility. As a result, all of the organizations that use the IES are susceptible to an attack.

However, the vulnerabilities are not the only things putting these organizations in danger; the ignorance and lack of attention, the outdated technology, and the old security practices are all a cause for concern.

Of course, it is possible that the careless operators do not regularly change their default password. In addition, it is also possible that the outdated technology does not possess the validation of authenticity that is required for the updates of major firmware.

Lee and Eireann Leverett, a risk researcher, are constantly working to address IES’s major security issues, and are even investigating alternative solutions in order to mitigate public fears.

Unless Lee and his team provide a lucrative solution, once hackers gain access to the organisation’s network, it becomes near impossible to save the respective organization.
